As promised Mick McNicholas introduced us to several innovative and brain-challenging life drawing techniques, including drawing with our ‘other’ hand, drawing with two hands at the same time, each hand taking on a different side of the model, drawing the figure upside down and drawing without looking at the paper! We drew straight lines without removing the charcoal from the paper, to form a matrix as a guide to drawing the model.

He then went on to show us methods of getting accurate angles and proportions using the intercross method. We then drew the shapes of shadows before filling them in. Our final 45 minute portrait was constructed using these techniques with charcoal and a putty rubber. This was certainly a challenging but a very interesting and rewarding workshop!
